It's looking like I won't get my residency before my 18 months are up for the purposes of paying the 3% prima casa tax rate (which I paid on purchase intending to get the residency by April 2007).
My question is: does anyone know whether it's up to me to find the path to paying the difference, whether I eventually get a bill from the government, and/or when this needs to happen? I haven't seen a thread on this issue. Before I pay the notaio to find out, I thought I'd check here first. Thanks.

Go to your comune and explain what happened. They will bill you for the new amount.

You can either go to the Comune and find out what has happened to your residency application, or go directly to the Agenzia delle Entrate to explain what has happened (this is called a ravvedimento operoso). If you do nothing, there is the risk that the Agenzia delle Entrate (revenue agency) may check with the Comune and once it establishes that you are not resident, you will have to pay back the difference in addition to a fine.

You don't need to go to a Notaio for this. If you wish to discuss further, please send me an email.
