It is still too early so many comuni are not online yet. When it is time though you can calculate it directly at your comune website http://www.comunecittasantangelo.com/new/index.php?id=84

Christina, you seem to have been a kind of Guru with all things ICI in the past.

We've recently completed and were about to happily follow your "how to ICI" when we received emails reading:

"Our office inform you that the rules regarding the obbligation to present the income tax return has changed during the last year; in fact people that lives abroad, and that own a property in Italy has to present whitin june 20- 2008, the income tax return and to pay tax but only if they are more that Euros 10.33."

and

"Regarding our last e-mail we need to say exactly that for Italian tax law, each property has a tax value, and a yearly rent (called: rendita catastale); A property has a yearly rent even if it doesn’t produce any income or used only for holiday . To verify the yearly rent you can read on the notarial deed it’s value or on the land register certificate. As we said on our last e-mail from 2008, but regarding the year 2007, people that doesn’t have Italian citizenship, and have a property in Italy, have to present a tax form were they declare some information regarding the land register and the yearly rent (rendita catastale). Even if the yearly rent of Italian property it’s very moderate and there’s any tax to pay, It’s obligatory to write and present to the tax office a income-tax return."

From scanning through other forums I know that we're not the only ones that have received this. Do you know if anything's changed or does the old guidance still hold good?

I've read about this often at www.italymag.co.uk/forums . Non-residents must pay income tax on virtual rental income (even if you don't rent the place out).

Dear Bill

Once again thanks for your help on ICI glad to hear they have stopped it just one silly question how do I tell if my property is A1 A8, or A9 category? will it be somewhere on my sales document.

Also I see everyone talking about tax even if you do not rent, my property is still being renovated does that mean I will still have to do it, if so I will have to find an accountant :-( I hate using other people.

I have another question for you, I have received in UK my water and electricity bill I want to pay direct debit and they have sent a form if I sent a blank copy could you tell me what info I am meant to fill in so I can send it back?

I hope one day I am as knowledgable as you on Italian paper work. I hope if I can find some land in Abruzzo to live out there within a year by then I should be speaking the language better and be able to manage payments easier than from a big distance.

Best Wishes

Jen

My atto di compravendita states my house is "Cat. A/2" which is a civil habitation. Should be in the same section where it states the RCL, how many rooms, etc.

I would check with this forum on the issue of income tax on virtual rent for inhabitable property- that's a bit out of my league:
http://www.italymag.co.uk/forums/legal/9645-new-ici-rul...8-non-residents.html
or
http://www.italymag.co.uk/forums/legal/9603-catastal-ca...es-values-pools.html

For the electric I have it paid automatically from my Italian bank (domiciliazione). The water I must pay in person at the Poste, but some comune you can pay online with Carte PostePay. Hopefully one of our UK members will chime in and answer how to pay from UK. Also addressed here:

No, as long as you have prima casa status (did you agree to become resident in the comune within 18 months?)

My Commune is not on line either but my friendly commune office gave me all the details I needed to fill in the online form. Then I appeared to be in minus figures so on asking the commune why so, we were told that as year round prima casa owners in a borgo of holiday homes we had nothing to pay!! wow_1
