My husband just got a requisition for Camp Ederle, Italy, which I think is closest to Vicenza (correct me if I am wrong). We are thinking about accepting it, but we want to check things out first. Would it be hard for us to find a three bedroom/house in that area for 1075 EUR? That's how much they are giving us for housing. Where can I look for rentals? When I googled it, all I got were vacation rentals. Also, how imperative would you say it is for us to learn the language and is that even possible in 8 months? Thanks for any help!

Hi, I'm moving to Vicenza next month to teach in an international school there and the school director recommended a rental agent that they have had very good success with. I met with the agent when I was there in April and felt really good about her. I have an appt. to view apartments next month and she told me that rents have been low in Vicenza over the past year or two, so it's a good time to find a reasonable place. I'll pass along her name/email if you want to contact her...her name is Stefania Zocche and her email is immobiliare@lacortedeimiracoli.191.it. The great thing is that she's fluent in English and she has also worked with helping a lot of Americans relocate bec. of the military. Have you been to Vicenza yet? I was really impressed with the charm of the city- it's small enough to get around easily and find your way, but has some beautiful shops and museums. I am really looking forward to living there! Good luck with your decision!
Oh, Nikke, one more thing...I really don't think the language will be a problem. When I was there, they told me that there were so many Americans in the area and it seemed that most people in the shops spoke English. I think if you learned a few key phrases, that would be fine. And it's much easier to learn over there being immersed into the language and culture, I think. Oh, the other great thing is that the train is so convenient to Vicenza. It is literally a 5 minute walk from the city center and it's on the direct line to Milan, Venice, Verona, Padua...when I was there, we took the train to a different place each day- so easy and convenient!! If you have any more questions about the city, let me know and maybe I can help.
I had a quick look and there are loads of apartments for rent in Vicenza. I don't think you will have a problem finding something in your price range that suits your needs. Only bad thing about these rental agents here in Italy is that you have to pay a (sometimes large) fee to the agency. Anyway, have a look at the website if you just want to get an idea of what you can get for 1075 euro. It's only in Italian, but it's pretty easy to figure out.
Best of luck to you!

Caserma Ederle is literally surrounded on all sides by Vicenza. Finding housing should be no problem- the Army has Italian agents who help you find a place, do the contracts, etc. Your Housing Allowance is supplemented based on the cost of housing in the area you are stationed, so you'll be able to afford a nice place.
We just found a place in Padova-(close to Vicenza) and we used an agency-www.tecnocasa.it the agents are really helpful. They do charge 10% of the years rent as their fee and most others charged one months rent. We like the house so we had to go with the agency! Let me know if you end up moving there.

i would go through the base agents first... lots more protection in the contracts they set up for you, in case of something like a sudden, unexpected transfer..which if you've been military very long you know it can happen.. other than that, though i've not been to vicenza in many years, it was and probably still is a lovely lovely town. good luck.
