Well, after reading the posts, I understand since my Dad applied for citizenship prior to my birth, that negates that. And while my mother's dad never did have citizenship and my mom was born here, I, unfortunately, was born before 1948. Anyone know why the 1948 for maternal side of family is the cut? Thanks all. Carole
This guy was born in Casablanca (Morocco) from an italian mother before 1948 and is the first case of citizenship via mother, so you may want to try the legal way:
Carole, sorry to hear about your ineligibility. Could you, or someone else, clarify whether the date your dad *applied* for naturalization is the one that counts or whether it's the date on his cert. of naturalization?
I feel like I've asked this before, but I'd like to make sure we've got our facts straight!

Fiona, Thanks for the info. My Italian is still so poor. I'm imagining though that he is getting citizenship. Am I right? And you're right. It can't hurt to try.

Thanks Kate. He still got citizenship about 5 years before I was born. I saw the other response about the person who was born before 1948. I guess it doesn't hurt to try. I have to get the documents for my Mom's side of the family. I don't believe her dad had citizenship and my Mom was born in the U.S. So, maybe there's still a chance.

Yes, he got the citizenship via the Courthouses in Bologna in Oct 2004 (and presented the case on 2002 -I understand-), he was born in MOrocco in 1947 and claimed his citizenship via mother. His mother was born in Bologna so the case was treated there because Bologna is where his vital records had to be transcribed.
If you want to do this you would need to contact a lawyer who will present your case where your italian ancestor was born (since you are not residing in a comune of Italy), only that this time the case is not difficult since there was already a first one.
That first case is "SENTENZA nella causa civile di I Grado iscrìtta al N. 11221/2002 R.G." , you would need to find a lawyer (any lawyer your case won't be difficult I presume) that will present it in the courthouse where your ancestor was born.
To find lawyers you could run an avvocati search on the internet.
