I don't read much here about traveling around Italy. Seems like so many expats just come here to plant themselves in a spot and stay there. Am I wrong? One of the great things about this country is all the great places to visit and the fact that it is close to so many other countries. We move around a fare amount, ski trips, tent camping, and now in our camper. Camping in Italy is great fun, especially if you get on well with Germans. It dosen't have to be expensive. We started out in our 1994 Alpha 145, it's a two door sort of hatchback, and a ski box on the roof with two kids. But without kids all one needs is a backpack and a bus or train ticket.

You can see pictures and read about our trips on my blog. I'd like to hear from other expats on the subject.

I love camping, and miss it! It's been a little while. My husb and I did one of our wedding registries at REI, have all new gear, now we just have to start looking into where to go. I grew up in Michigan and camped alot there in the north, on the lakes, was beautiful. I have to say i was a little disappointed when i saw the camping spots here in italy, they seemed a bit bare, no trees and wilderness...Are you familiar with any nice spots here in Italy? Your Croatia pics are beautiful...maybe we'll have to explore outside of italy to start camping again. As for skiing(snowbrding), I count the days till winter! I'm pretty new here, last season was our first winter here and we only made it to Sestola, which was fine for a short distance away, but next season we definitely have the alps in our plans, thinking Zermatt first.

The skiing in the Dolomites is the best in the World. You don't need to go to Zermatt.

Go to the book store you will find lots of books on camping in Italy. You will find everything from backpacking and mountain climbing in the Dolomites, they come here from all over the World, to organized camps with nightly entertainment, and daily classes, at the beaches. Most of the beach camps do have plenty of trees. European camping in commercial camps is a lot different than the US. You will find hot showers, stores, restaurants, and electricity at the sites. You will also find a big variety of campers, autocaravans, trailers, car campers in tents and back packers. And plenty of Germans, Dutch, a few French, and almost no Americans.

Look at my pictures from the previous years.
