I miss...the fresh markets where you can get good, healthy food. Yeah, maybe the choices here in America are more ampie. But in trying to grocery shop as a single mom, I look for stuff that's inexpensive and healthy. It just doesn't exist in America! I love Whole Foods but it costs a ton of money! I can't afford to shop there! So, I'm forced to choose between eating healthy and going broke or saving some and eating garbage. In Italy I really didn't have this problem.

Ah, la nostalgia!

That is true. But I do miss the bookstores I could an age browsing, the lack of international foods in supermarkets-there is so much pasta and vitello I can stand!
There are plus points and minus points of this great country-the minus points just seem more pronounced when trying to adjust to a new country.

The only international foods that we buy in the supermarkets are from Italy.

That's such a shame! In the US there is such a great variety of cuisines and flavours.

Luckily for me, I live in an immigrant neighbourhood in central Rome, so I'm able to get hold of lots of "exotic" food items like tofu, fresh coriander, avocadoes, PG tips tea, Indian spices, coconut milk, lemon grass etc. I would have big problems if I were limited only to Italian foods.

Difference in upbringing and culture? If I want exotic I go for seafood - lobster, bay scallops, littleneck clams, Blue Point oysters, etc.

Me, just put me near a good farmers market and I'm happy, international or not. Smiler
