Do you spend lesson time teaching, and then have the student complete written exercises for homework? Or do you have the student complete written exercises during the lesson?

I'm not a teacher but out teacher, at the local adult ed school, does that. After working on the exercises she then goes over them with the class. She also give out work to do at home for the class. That this is a weekly class and some of the students think the time should be spent talking, reading, etc.

Depends on the class really. Some students need extra exercises to get them practising, where as other keen students want home work. I think both options are acceptable - at home or in class. Variety is always good, so maybe at times do exercises in class and other times give exercises to do at home.
