Congratulations on your pregnancy!

I wanted to join the 36 year old club! That is pretty funny. I only turned 37 a couple of weeks ago, and I am due with my first baby in about a month!!!!

I further really wanted to re-iterate something a couple of people said above....

If you are considering the Amnio, it's most important to consider what you would do with that information because if you would keep the baby regardless of positive results for Downs, there is really no point.

AND

consider whether your results would come in too late to make a difference. In my case, the results came after 4 weeks- too late to terminate if I so chose (which I wouldn't have anyway.)

Good luck and congrats again!

Ramona, if you google "consultori familiari Roma" there are several sites that come up. Here is one of the less "chaotic" ones!

Doing a quick search on Google, I found this list here:
http://www.vitadidonna.it/copia_di_vita_di_000022.html

The consultorio is not a place to do your blood tests (magari!). It's mainly a place to go for advice when pregnant or breastfeeding. Mine also offers prenatal and post-natal classes. I didn't know anything about it but my women friends in the neighborhood told me it was the place they went to get on birth control pills when they were teenagers - again, sort of a Planned Parenthood. But no hospital functions.

Michelle - my local consultorio will also do all your prenatal visits and scans unless you have an unusual pregnancy. I only discovered it halfway through but they were great! They also helped me out with breastfeeding (which didn't work out but not their fault!) and got me some counselling as I had a bit of a traumatic pregnancy. The biggest advantage was that they were so NICE and CARING and I loved going there - so different from the maternity hospital.

That's strange - they just list the ASL office on Via Martino della Battaglia as the 'consultorio familiare' for Municipio I (ie central Rome). It's just the main office of ASL. That's where I went for my blood tests and for my daughter's shots - long lines, chaos, bureaucracy, nasty people and lots of grumbling. They managed to lose my blood test results once too. Frowner And they don't do pregnancy scans, tampone vaginale etc- they made me go to the hospital for those.

I hear you. Milan has a Center for Post-Partum depression and I was very lucky to get help there after my son was born when the 'baby blues' just wouldn't go away. I too think that the traumatic pregnancy and birthing experience led to the problems I had. I am still taking advantage of their services and only pay 6 Euros a visit. I highly recommend it to anyone having difficulty after the birth of a child. They are located in Macedonio Melloni hospital.

Ramona,
I just found this. This is an example of services offered in one of Rome's consultori:

I think it's worth doing some research on statistical risks before deciding to do the amnio. Another factor is - what would you do with the information? In our case, we weren't sure we would terminate even if we found out our baby had Downs so that made it even less important for us to do the amnio.

Anyway, the point is that you don't have to do the amnio just because you're over 35. Your statistical risks may be much lower than that of an average 35 year old after you do the traslucenza nucale - and you may chose to forego the amnio. And the amnio itself carries risks- it's an invasive test. In addition, you need to decide what you would do with the information from the amnio

I could say ditto to what written above, that's the thoughts on my mind, too. Well, I still have time to decide, it's not I need to decide tomorrow.
A difficult one, though... even if I always think it's better to know rather than not, regardless what you consider doing if the result is not good. Anyway, in this sense I try to be positive.

Raw meat- I too, try not to eat too much of this stuff but sincerely, I could avoid everything but NOT Crudo di Parma. And I believe that Listeria in a Parma it's a "never heard of". My doctors gave me no nutrition advice other than trying not to get too fat at the beginning.

Consultorio I think it all depends on WHERE they are. If they're in a school, like Michelle's they do not offer medical assistance.
IF they're in a little hospital like mine, they do the follow ups too.
Ciao, e ancora GRAZIE!
Chia
