Hi - just wondered how many of you have private health insurance in Italy. I found out too my (very high) cost that the Italian Health Service does not cover some necessary health care that I needed (namely months of physiotherapy after a serious accident) and that I needed insurance to cover this. I now have insurance and recommend it to everyone else! Hope you don't mind me posting this - just hope others learn from my big mistake.

Generally speaking if the phisiotheray is merely suggested by the doctor as a mean to facilitate and speed up recovery it is not included; if it's declared essential for it, it is fully covered.

Hello Everyone, I havelived in San Francisco for 28 years and I am now thinking to move back. I have the same concerns some of you have. Since I have pre existing health issues I am looking for additional private insurance. ANy suggestions on what company can provide it? I am an italian citizen but although i can have the basic medical assistance I woud like to be able to have private insurance. BTW I was born in Via D'Azeglio in Bologna.
Thanks for you help!!! thanx_1

dont' do it right away. Actually pre-existing chronic problems are better assisted through the SSN. Once you are in Italy, ask residency as soon as possible, than get enlisted in the SSN and one you are assigned a family doctor bring all of your medical documentation to him and he will have you tested for our issues, so that you wil fall into the £esente per patologia" category, which extends free assistance to all the threapies required in your case, even though these are not ordinarly covered.
