Guys, now that a new phase in the USA-Europe relationships seems to open up, haven’t you got a few spare tanks to send down here?
Come to think of it, what do you care about Pakistan and Iraq?
We are your ally, and it’s US you’ve got to liberate!

Such a berk, isn't he?
What I can't forgive him for is that he's giving an awful name to Italy. Has anyone taken a look at the world's newspapers? That's what the world will perceive of us.
Ok, there's more than that, but symbols do count.

Sounds as though he attended the James G. Watt School of Inappropriate Comments.

Italy's only black lawmaker, Jean-Leonard Touadi, called the comment embarrassing.

"In the United States, a joke like that wouldn't just be politically incorrect, but a great offense to this amazing example of integration, which it seems the Italian premier should take as an example," Touadi said.

I'm just surprised our resident gaggle of "anti-political correctness" geese haven't descended on this thread in Berlu's defense.

What's to get into a sanctimonious lather of PC over? Berlu, famous for his penchant for a George Hamilton-style perma-tan, sticks his foot in his mouth pretty much every time he opens it, probably even when he yawns. How could anyone possibly be offended?

I spoke too soon.

BTW here's a recap of his greatest hits:
http://www.ansa.it/site/notizie/awnplus/english/news/2008-11-06_106283018.html

And 62% of the Italian electorate approve of the job he's doing- hopefully this too shall pass.

When is SNL going to invite Berlu--the guy's a giggle a minute! Maybe that's why Italians love him, he's such a gas.

Yeah, this one really tickled me:
quote:
Berlusconi described Fascist dictator Benito Mussolini as a benign leader who never murdered anyone and whose internment camps were ''like holiday camps''.

What a hoot!

Apparently anyone who thought he was being racist is an "imbecile". It just keeps getting better. The above article also includes other examples of his PC-ness!!

I can see I need to start tacking smileys on to my posts.

But, Bill, you need to join your wife in Birmingham and get some of those good vibes--sounds like you could use a little cheer in your life--especially when you can't tell the difference between hate crimes and bad (or in Berlu's case, no) taste.

How can anyone possibly take him seriously? The group that has me not laughing is Lega Nord & Co.

No, I'm very happy right here in my gorgeous little town. Took the dogs for an awesome hike on the mountain behind the house yesterday. It doesn't get better than this.

That changes nothing about Berlusconi sucking though, as do his Lega Nord cronies.

I have no idea what this is about:

Confused

For someone who is pro-political correctness, you certainly don't have any qualms about calling people names, do you? All the fuss about "cattle" but referring to people who disagree with you as a gaggle of geese is fine Roll Eyes

Do you mean you disagree with Alyson and Grtngs about Berlusconi's racist comment?

No, I don't but I am no longer commenting on political threads on this board as I am tired of my comments being misinterpreted and having to rephrase everything I write.

I am commenting on your language use which I found rather ironic considering the previous thread.

Hey, Berlu made Keith Oberman's Worst Persons In The World list. As a bonus, they even included this video: http://it.youtube.com/watch?v=2ZBYIeZzEZw

No apology for the geese thing, then Bill. Just continual sniping? I have already stopped commenting on several threads because of your bullying and quite frankly I am sick of it as I think are many others. I have been using this board for a couple of years and I have really enjoyed chatting to people and sharing my experience of living in Italy. I don't know why you continually pick at my posts and try to align me with Berlusconi or with the Lega Nord when I HAVE NEVER SUGGESTED ANYTHING OF THE SORT. I have on several occasions asked you to stop. I have tried offering you a peace sign but no, you continue. Well done you. You have succeeded in alienating another board member. I will find somewhere else to post in the future.

Frankly, the topic is about Berlusconi's racist comments. You say you agree with Alyson and Grtngs about those racist comments, so rest assured, you are not disagreeing with me. I'm definitely not referring to you as a gaggle of geese, because you are not defending Berlu's politically incorrect comments. You seem genuinely offended, even though I'm clearly not referring to you, and for that I apologize. sor_1_

In fact, it seems only one "anti-politically correct" person has responded, which does not constitute a gaggle (many more than one). I'm delighted in this case to have been proven wrong. Smiler

What do they put into Friuli kool-aid? Do you have any idea how utterly disjointed/nonsensical that post was?

In case anyone else is reading this thread: thank you C in Bo for stepping up to the plate. Bill needs a holiday from his holiday--that or a reality check from all those mountain highs.

Bill, re-read, assuming you know how, my posts: whenever have I:

-supported Berlusconi
-made an overtly racist comment (although that will have to be filtered through your idiosyncratic definition of the term)
-commended racist comments made by Italian politicians?

And seeing as you adore your wife and are envious that she can be where you claim to want to be, why are you clinging (bitterly??) to your little mountain village in the heart of Lega-Nord territory?

Funny about C in Bo, though--not one comment on this thread about thoughts concerning the original post, just probably rightful commentary about bullying elsewhere. So that "apology" rings pretty hollow.

Always has been
quote:
something in Friuli kool-aid
. Sometimes the effect is to provoke insightful and right-on-target responses, but other times it causes stuff like the above. Totally inutile and we just have to get over it. Apologies to all those Friuli people who do not drink that kool-aid.

Back on topic:

This from one of my Italian friends living in New York for years:

quote:
L'avete sentita l'ultima di Berlusconi?
http://www.unita.it/pdf/20081107.pdf

Ma ci si lancia perfino il Manifesto che in prima pagina di mercoledi riportalva il titolo
"Indovina chi viene a cena". Ma siamo matti?

E poi, ciliegina sulla torta, la vignetta di Forattini, che deve essersi bevuto il cervello

http://www.polisblog.it/post/2776/da-abbronzato-a-negro...peggio-di-berlusconi

Per fortuna che viviamo qui negli U.S. of A.
per fortuna!

Ain't that a shame?!?
