We shall overcome,
We shall overcome,
We shall overcome, some day.
Oh, deep in my heart,
I do believe
We shall overcome, some day.

Come gather round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown

Veltroni got this part right:
quote:

Translation if you don't speak/read Italian:

The mother of racism is fear. The problem is that feeding it there is also the political use of immigration. The greatest hypocrisy in who, like the government, should have the honesty to say that since they are here (in power) the landings have doubled and this is creating a new (underground) pockets of clandestinity.

Veltroni remembers the “too many episodes” of racism in recent months and says no to “creeping racism”, something “ before which we can never be indifferent and that we will always fight because Italy is not and never will be a racist country”. The Pd, Veltroni guarantees, will continue to “believe that fear and it’s perception must be answered, and should be given together with answers to those who arrive to work and seek integration and rights, and ask to be allowed to vote, starting with the administratives” (local elections).

Several threads on this site now refer to the current 'racist' policies being promoted (mainly) by the Lega Nord, but that are supported by the current coalition government that is in power. Lead of course by the man himself, your friend and mine Roll Eyes .... Silvio Berlusconi!

Let's face it - the truth is that the only way Berlusconi can hold on to power, and be able to force through the kind of legislation that HE wants, is by sucking up to the damned awful (I'm finding it hard to be 'polite' here) Lega Nord.

And the only way Bossi can promote his party's racist dogma is by supporting Berla's newly founded (7 April 2008) 'anti corruption' Forza Italia party (huh? - please, don't make me laugh)! They both hoodwinked large numbers of the electorate in the run up to the last elections.

Many right and centre right voters fully expected that their idol, 'Berla', would be returned with a good working majority - yeah, right! But of course he couldn't form a government without the support of others 'on the right' - but many did not imagine that the main bedfellows he chose would be so far to the right that they're on the verge (please...) of falling out of bed!

But until they fall out over something or other, they will continue with their current policies... So all that Italy, immigrants, clandestini, and even Walter Veltroni can do is pray that the fight between them comes pretty damned soon! Until THAT happens and Berla forms a new government WITHOUT the Lega, we can complain all we like here, but how many of us have 'the vote' and can make a difference?

OK, OK - I'm getting off soapbox2

I hear this a lot- why mention what Lega Nord is doing?- stop whining! But keep in mind that these laws Lega Nord is passing affect us immigrants here in Italy. If we don't know what laws are coming down the pipe, we can't adjust to new conditions. Is it better to remain uninformed and wait until we're surprised by a knock on the door from the police?

BTW Berlu's new party is PdL, not Forza Italia- that's been around since 1994.

Ah yes, I forgot the re-branding exercise. I must be lucky and mainly have leftish friends as I have yet to meet anybody who admits to having voted for him.
