Most Brits and Americans do not have a fare voting system so when Blair or Bush get into government its usually with less than 50% of the public that voted for them so they (and their subsequent actions) do not reflect the voters. When Blair wanted to go into Iraq over 60% of the British were not in agreement. So he went on television to demonstrate that Sadam had nuclear weapons (backed up by satellite) to make his invasion in Iraq more plausible. Yes Blair was dangerous. But I didnt vote for him, I wouldnt vote conservative either, what choices are there? Bear in mind also that the general public of the Uk is very multi cultural and doesnt reflect the society that existed when there was the British empire. My father is from Belfast (and catholic) however, I am entirely grateful to him that he decided to move to England and that I grew up there and not in Belfast and many friends who are from Indian or Pakistani families are also glad that they didnt grow up in India/Pakistan where life is hard.
Its true British papers critise Italy but mostly the Italian government (which is justified, but they also critise the British government too), there's rarely personal critisism of Italians and "anything italian" as people - in fact its quite the opposite. Most British, especially those who are quite well off believe the Italians to be more cultured and stylish than them and think that absolutely anything Italian is synonymous with quality. When I came here I had a very high inflated opinion of Italy but this has slowly been eroded during my stay and I have been able to see things more realistically (more like Gomorra than la dolce vita... when I arrived I lived in a small town in Tuscany I now live in Tor Bella Monaca a bad suburb to the east of Rome). I guess when you think the Brits loath everything italian you're actually reflecting your own views of Italy. I can understand that. After 10 years here I find it hard to find anything positive at all but then thats my fault and probably doesnt reflect the actual reality (which is conditioned heavily by where you live, work and who you mix with). I held the same negative opinions about some aspects of the uk society (binge drinking, pub crawls, baby gangs, high level of violence)when I left to come here, but now I am able to see some of the more positive aspects of the UK which before I was unable to see.
Its very dangerous to brand whole populations surely this is how war and intollerance comes about. However it is quite justified to critise people like Berluska, Bush, Blair etc
I couldn't agree more. Well said, Kat!

Bill2, go back over the thread - you will see that I actually approved and agreed with Kat! What's getting me down is a wider issue. You and JAP just don't see eye to eye and it is starting to spoil some of the discussions. It is you two that I want to call a truce, no-one else! Why he rubs you up the way he does, I really don't understand! And JAP, you are as bad at times!! I wasn't talking about your response to my question about the seriousness or otherwise of this thread! There is nothing wrong, in my book, in provoking an issue - it's the way the issue is then addressed that is getting me down! And, yeah, I know one of you is going to take this the wrong way - but who are the real Freaks on this thread?! Annika, I was writing this before you replied, so apologies!

So did I, in case it wasn't clear. Folks, there's NO Kat vs JAP issue here. I agree with what she wrote and my long post above was evidence of this: where do you get the idea I disagree with her from? Storm in a cup.

I've got a life, this is a forum, so why bother?
Perhaps you don't care, but it certainly doesn't look good for newcomers to this forum. We want this forum to be friendly and welcoming, not a place where you're afraid to (so to speak) open your mouth. That, and it totally pisses me off to see more and more discussions turn out this way.

The Italian press however refers to them as being "I Rom" in the plural and not Roma.

Well, for what it's worth, I agree with you, but there's little point in insisting, that's why I did't bother...

Carole/Lorna: Where do you see the words "in Italian" in either of my posts below? quote: Sounds similar to some of our board members who believe Roma and Romanian are synonymous. quote: Roma is plural of Rom.

On the question of Rom and Roma, I think you are right Bill... The FOSI-ROM movement uses the word Roma when writing about the Romany people and so maybe the word Rom is usance in Italy for the people and a person. >FOSI_ROM<Please accept my apologies... But I still stand by the other things I said! P.S. Sorry Lorna....
