I saw this this morning on another site, and it seems the former partigiani, such as are still alive, are all in a huff over it. I guess Lee was trying to highlight the aspect of African Americans during WWII more than the activities of Italian partigiani. But I used to live in a village where citizens were shot by Nazis in retaliation (the old 10 for 1 rule) and while partigiani are normally well respected, there was a bit of animus about the way innocent non-combatants took the hit.

Yes, the article mentions partisans safely hidden in the hills while the innocent villagers were mown down.
