Just today my partner said that he really let his landlord in Rome have it- he told her she was a racist and she needed to vent her racist beliefs to someone else. She is so xenophobic, racist, and anti-immigrant and he couldn't bear it anymore. I mean, this woman has 2 who sons do NOTHING to contribute to society, take, take, and complain, and the entire family is corrupt as heck. To top it off: the rental agreement is not registered so they are not even paying taxes and the consequence is that my partner can't use the rent as a tax deduction. Outcome: if they want law and order they'll get it- I am turning them into the Guardia di Finanza (when my partner leaves in August) and they will be fined for 2+ years of unpaid taxes.
It’s very sad to see this rising tide of anti-immigrant sentiment as well as homophobia occurring in Italy. It is particularly sad considering that the Italians themselves would have been in a bad way had other countries not taken them in many years ago – how little they have learned. Again, yesterday in Rome, stores run by immigrants were attacked and a gay teenager was beaten up. This is really unacceptable and should not be part of a country that claims to be a western democracy. Years and years of inept governments is what has contributed to Italy’s garbage problems, collapsing infrastructure, etc.. Yes, uncontrolled immigration does create problems, but this has been allowed to happen for years by the left and the right! I sincerely hope that these violent attacks are going to end and those that perpetuate them will be punished.
This is totally disgusting. I know not all Italians feel like this by a long shot, but with key figures in the government as corrupt and prejudiced as they are I won't be moving to Italy anytime soon as I am a visible minority. It's sickening.

As Damien notes, immigrant shops in Rome were attacked. For those who believe anti-immigrant sentiment is justified due to Rom crime, please note that these shops belonged to Indians and Bengalesi.

Poi gli assalitori si sono diretti alla parallela via Ascoli Piceno, dove hanno frantumato le vetrine della lavanderia-phon center e del negozio di alimentari, gestiti da bengalesi. Il negozio di alimentari ha subito i danni maggiori, un frigo e la merce sugli scaffali, soprattutto bottiglie di birra e vino, distrutti.
Testimoni italiani hanno spiegato che il raid puo' essere scaturito da uno scippo, vittima un italiano, avvenuto nei giorni scorsi. Per questo un uomo si sarebbe rivolto al titolare del negozio di alimentari di via Macerata, allo scopo di riavere indietro almeno i documenti scippati, con la convinzione che l'esercente conoscesse il ladro, ritenuto uno straniero. L'uomo avrebbe inoltre minacciato di rappresaglie il negoziante. Subito la citta' e il mondo politico hanno reagito al raid.

I am a black American and a French citizen. It's clear I am not Italian. Sometimes people ask if I'm African or Caribbean (my parents are from the Caribbean and I don't look like Beyonce. ha) So far I have been treated with nothing but kindness and respect from my 80 year old landlady, officials at my bank, Comune, the market vendors near my apt. etc. etc.
I don't know what your racial background is but I have and esp. my parents dealt with a lot of racism in the states (like getting blocked from buying a house in a certain suburb, me hearing the N word constantly once we did move to another 'burb). That said of course I don't think everyone in America is racist and there are some great things about my home country warts and all.
My attitude is every country has citizens who are racists. I will always have to deal with it, unless I move to a place like where my parents now live, where I would be part of the majority culture.
In South Africa, South Africans are burning down homes of immigrants from where? Zimbabwae (sp), people who look like them. I fear these attitudes are going to worse as our natural resources get depleted, the population grows, the gap between the haves and the haves not continues to widen, the instability of many poor countries and the rise of fundamentalism.
Cynical politicians are using people's fears to their advantage. I bet the shopkeepers who were attacked are here legally. These kids that attacked them are probably jobless and stupid. Alemanno's remarks do seem out of character to me, but such inconsistencies don't surprise me from politicians.
As for the "raids", I'm reminded of the raids and attacks we had in the States against immigrants after 9/11... many of which were against Indians mistaken for Arabs... Interesting how often ignorance and violence go hand in hand. Scary how quickly these types of violence prone animals seem to come out of the woodwork all over the world under certain social climates. (And I'm not talking abut soccer matches... )

Actually it's perfectly logical if you think about it. It's natural to be suspicious of anything you don't understand, and if you're ignorant, there's a lot you don't understand. So it's either flight or fight: run like the dickens or punch it in the face.
What we're looking at is this fight mechanism taken to the extreme: stomp it out before it becomes a problem, why wait?
It also has elements of the mob mentality: easy to egg on those who have been harbouring doubts.
I hate to be the one to bring this up, but there are incidents of a bit of "mob mentality" here on this forum (kept at bay by our ever-vigilant moderators) and I'm not the first to point it out: incidents of trolls or spammers or criticism of the overweight. Doesn't take all that much, even among the non-ignorant.

You are of course right caribbean ragazza and they are other reasons I have not listed that we are choosing not to move back to Italy. There are many parts of the US I will not move to either for similar reason Racists do exist everywhere, just like educated people, ignorant people, bullies. No country has a monopoly on any of this and it is good to keep that in mind.
I am Chinese-Jamaican by the way. Caribbean connection of a sort?

I think it kind of trivializes the plight of the immigrants whose stores were damaged, or the gay guy that was beaten up to compare them to people posting on a forum. Not a lot of empathy there.
If you are responding to my post, I apologize and did not mean to trivialize anything if that is the way it came off. I am still 100% disgusted and while I do recognize that no country has a monopoly of this sort of thing, it does not by any means excuse it.
