Hi

I have been tempted by the fantastic flower stalls in Milan a few times over the past months, but no matter what variety I buy, they don't even last a week (more like 3 days). Any tips for where I can buy cut flower food, this is usually given with all flowers in the UK so I am wondering if this is my problem.

Thanks

Ceri

For all flower food types try Leroy Merlin (anyone would think I work for them, I know haha).
That said, my grandma used to always add about half a teaspoon of sugar to a vase of cut flowers in order to make them last. Swore by it she did. Have a go!

I use all kinds of tricks depending on the flower. For example, for woody stems like peonies and roses, I cut the stems at a 45 degree angle when I get them so they will soak up more water. Strip all the leaves off the stems that contact the water or else they will rot, also change the water often. Sometimes I put a splash of bleach or diswashing soap in the water so does not go bad too quickly. Good luck.

I know this is back on the 'Wonderful World of White Wine Vinegar' topic (!) but according to one website you should add 2 tablespoons of sugar and two tablesppons of white vinegar to 1 quart of water, trim the stems and change the water every 5 days. cool

In addition to the suggestions every has made here--all of which i have used, i also will sometimes put an aspirin into the water.
And for tulips a copper penny keeps that a long time.
