I am renting an apartment here in Italy, I just received residency in December (am trying to file for citizenship here), I do not work, I file a joint return with my husband who has returned to the states...I guess I will have to pay income tax here in Italy on our joint return?

Not sure I understand. You already have residenza, so you already have a pds. In what context is the questura asking for a tax return?

Your husband definitely won't be paying Italian taxes on US earned income (your husband is an American and resides in the US, right)?

Ciao, Bill. Yes, my husband resides in the US. Yes, I have residenza, but am renewing my PdiS...I will go next week to the questura and I was told to bring a copy of our tax return. I don't work, but my husband and I file a joint return. Who is required to pay taxes here, I mean, can someone explain the situations for Americans with varying types of visas (ex: ER, tourist turned into attesa for citidinanza, etc.)? I read that military retirees are not taxed on their retirement benefits, but what if a retiree is elsewhere and the spouse is here in Italy?

This may have more to do with confirming you have adequate income rather than an Italian tax issue....??

I agree. The questura wouldn't want to talk taxes anyway- that would be agenzia entrate.

Thank you for your responses, Bill and stelvio. I thought all along that perhaps it was proving sufficient funds, but then I started looking at all the tax and residency info on this forum and I started to wonder about who pays taxes with what types of visas, etc.. I must be patient and see what they want at the questura, but since we are discussing this, who is responsible for paying taxes, specifically Americans and with what types of visas? Thanks alot for your help!
