Hi,

I am considering applying to this school, but I can't find any information on the cost. Does anyone have any information they could share with me regarding the tuition for one of their three year degree programs?

Thanks a lot,
Allen

Hi Allen, do you have the name for this school (Università per stranieri?) and if so in which town. Also which program are you looking into?

Hi Christina,

I have no idea why I didn't put this info in my first post wine Wink but yes, it's Università per stranieri di Siena. I was interested in the three year program in Cultural and Linguistic Mediation.

Thanks,

Allen

Did you read the guide they have (a pdf file) HERE I didn't see any prices but I did not scan the whole 177 page guide. You may have to write them an email to see what the costs entail.

Here you can find the costs detail. I had to go through the site in Italian to locate it, than do the same itinerary in the English site. WOW! Usability at its best! Roll Eyes

Thank you. I went through that 177 page document last night, but didn't find any cost info either. AliceTwain, thanks to your link, I see some cost information, but I don't quite understand it. For instance,

I see a first installment of ~€ 290 in tax stuff, then a second installment of € 542,00. I guess I'm not clear on what that covers. Is that the cost for the year, or term, or...?Confused

I sent them an email a few days ago, but haven't gotten a reply.

Anyway, thanks again.
Allen

It's the cost for the year. You still have to buy your own books, but that's quite average for a public university in Italy, maybe a bit highier than in outher universities due to the foreign language being used more often and for the cost of other languages tutors and such stuff. Since I see that my carefully sought link to the English page still directs you to the Itlaian version, I paste the full relevant text:

To enroll in degree courses applicants must send:

- the completed form available from the website of Siena University
- their school leaving certificate (in some cases a simple declaration is acceptable)
- 3 passport-size photographs
- a photocopy of a document proving identity

On presentation of this documentation applicants will be issued with the necessary forms for the payment of the first instalment of the university fees (€ 181,00) plus € 11,00 to cover the electronic revenue stamp and € 98,00 for the regional tax. The second instalment of € 542,00 should be paid by April 30. Reductions are available in certain circumstances of economical difficulty or particular merit.
In order to accede to university degree courses, foreign students must satisfy the qualification requirements for non-italian citizens applying to such courses issued annually by the Italian Government and published by the Ministry for Education, Universities and Research.
According to these regulations Siena University requires an exam in culture as evidence of the student's level of preparation. This does not represent a means of limiting course numbers, as failure to achieve the minimum grade does not entail exclusion, but indicates that certain gaps in the candicate's knowledge need to be remedied.

More details can be obtained from:

Ahhhh! I see. Thank you very much. Wow, that seems pretty reasonable, 832 Euro + books for a year. Definitely less than the states. thumbs up

Be aware that these requirements are exactly what I am going through, and you must apply withen specific dates in the spring, for the following fall. Once you are approved through your consulate (pretty much garunteed - I've been told - as long as all of your documents are in order) you most go to Italy to take an Italian language exam (exam in culture they call it) that happens beginning of sept. After you take this exam, you must return to America to wait for admittance, and if you are admitted, your classes to start (Oct/Nov) before you may return to Italy.

Please note, this is just how *I* understand the rules, from what I've been told by the SF consulate. sign37 But if you are interested in going ot the school. I suggest you contact the school and your consulate ASAP to gather all the information you'll need, as it is a long process of applications and gathering everything you need. BTW, it's not the VISA department that you contact, they dont issue the qualification requirements, it's another department (that I still haven't quite figured out who they are).

Good luck! It's worth it if you can get through it all! thumbs up

sorry, here is more information. It's not as cheap as if you were taking a degree class at a regular Italian University, like Biology, etc.
Classes at the school in Perugia run 233 euros per month.
This is form the Siena school:

The regular Italian language and culture courses last seven weeks and consist of 120 hours of lessons and five hours of tests (initial, intermediate and final).
There are six levels that corrispond to the European classification as follows:
Level one Level A1
Level two Level A2
Level three Level B1
Level four Level B2
Level five Level C1
Level six Level C2

In the left you can find the objectives to be reached at each level.
Students enrolled on the fifth and sixth levels must also undertake two courses on culture, each of 20 hours, to be chosen from those offered by the Faculty of Italian Language and Culture .
Students pass from one level to another following a final exam.
There are a number of different integrative activities for students enrolled in the regular Italian language and culture courses. Remedial courses for students on levels one and two can be organized and for students on levels three and four thematic courses will be available.

Ammissione. Students eligible for admission to universities in their home country may apply for these courses. All students are required to take an entry exam to assess their level of proficiency in the Italian language. Students passing the final exam of any given level may proceed to the next level.

Certificates. At the end of each level, students who have passed the final exam receive a certificate with the exam result (based on a scale of 30). Only those levels that have ten or more enrolments will be offered. If there are insufficient numbers to offer classes at all levels, one or more may be grouped together.

Dates:
7 March - 22 April 2005
2 May - 17 June 2005
13 July - 31 August 2005
5 September - 21 October 2005
2 November - 16 December 2005

How to enroll. Please see Guidelines for Enrolment.

Fees.€ 760,00 payable in two instalments:

1st instalment: € 200,00
2nd instalment: € 560,00
Students who have been awarded a grant or scholarship by the Italian Government are entitled to a 50 per cent reduction on enrolment fees.
