Maybe this is a dumb question, but I'm wondering if electricity rates vary according to the time of day?

I was perusing our bill the other day. They list a blue tariff period and an orange tariff period. Not sure what the respective hours are, though.

Yes, I believe Enel offers different rates for night time use. Like if you have to wash clothes, it would cost you less to run the washer at night than if you ran it during the morning or day hours. I pretty much do all my washing at night right before I go to bed, for that reason.

To all clients not option for a specific tariff, the one applied is either D2 (for users up to 3Kwh) or D3 (for the others). The old tariffs that contemplated a lower price for night use or weekend use are not applied anymore and they will probably be updated in the future.

So, do I need to get my Enel documents or most recent bill out to check on this?

Our neighbor almost always washes her clothes at night, so this is what made me wonder about it.

I am renting an apartment in Venice and paying my landlady for the utilities. What question should I ask her to find out about the tarrifs here?

HOLY CR*P! I just went to the Enel site to view my next bill and it is almost 5 times more then what I normally pay!
There is a part that says Ricalcolo bollette precedenti 131.42
What does that mean? They 'forgot' to charge me the right price on my prior bills? Oooooofa, I should have known it was too good to be true to be paying so little. So much for thinking that running my washer at night was helping keep my costs down! Roll Eyes

Exactly: your previous bills were charged on the basis of an unusually low reading which caused a wrong trend. Now the actual use of electricity has been calculated and you are being charged the difference you would have had to pay. The current reading,on the other hand, may be unusually high, in which case when ENEL will calculate the actual consumption next time you may be restituted the money in excess you have paid.

We read our bills carefully, both for electricity and gas. If the current estimate's way off from the actual reading we make sure to call in the correct reading. Every bill lists the time period to do this, and it's automated, so all you have to do is punch in or speak the numbers. Getting the system to understand our American accents can be challenging at times, especially when we think our pronunciation is pretty good!

Got my 2 monthly bill today which was €32, but slightly under-read so should have been about 40.

I used to work in the Electricity supply industry in the UK. Nor sure about tariffs here, but to obtain a cheaper rate at night you would need a two-rate meter which has a timeswitch and would display what is used at the cheaper night rate as well as the day usage. The new electronic meters I'm not familiar with, but the principal of transparency to the consumer still applies,so if cheaper rates are available I suspect it should be visible.

I know this post is getting on for a year old but was wondering if it still applies? I have noticed that my meter shows different "Tar. in Atto" at different times, T2 and T3, T3 supposedly being the cheaper time. If so I think i will be doing my washing during T3!!!

How often does there meter get read by the way? Smiler

Every 60 days. But it sounds like you have one of the new electronic meters. No one has to come read it- it automatically sends the reading in.

That's clever!....yes I'm sure it's a new one. That's good actually as in the UK I always seemed to be out when they came to read the meter. Smiler As for the T2/T3 bit....any ideas anyone?

I had one of the new meters put in last year. I've not long received the bill for November-December as they don't seem to have sorted themselves out after the change. Due a big bill soon then :-(, but no indication of a day/night rate - although I'm not with ENEL.

Valli, as I understand the bill, which may be incorrect, the tarrifs are applied a bit like taxes. So, you pay one tarrif for the first say 100 units, another for the next and a 3rd for the rest. Doesn't matter when you use them, it is your total usage that attracts the different tarrifs in a specific ratio. Does this make sense or help?! Smiler

Yes Alyson, there also those tarrifs.

You should find everything about them on enel's website. As far as I remember those tarrifs should be explicitly choose, they are not the "default" ones you get.
