We have two teenage boys - ages 13 and 14. And, we are desperately trying to put all our "ducks in a row" before crossing the pond. We are trying to get residency but if we can't get it before we arrive in Italy, does anyone know if we can put our boys in public school there - without residency papers? Or, do we have to wait until our residency comes through?
Also, does anyone out there have info on schools in the Citta de Castello area? That's where we're looking to move.

Thanks in advance.
Jenny

Jenny,
I am pretty sure you can enroll the kids w/o residency papers, although I will check with my friend who, coincidentally, has a child enrolled in school in Citta di Castello. Also we would like very much to make contact with you if you do end up there or nearby as we have a 13 yr old daughter who is not too happy about the Italian turn our lives have taken. She is still in the US but will be here in the spring. We do homeschool our kids so I really don't have much to offer on the Italian public school issues ( and I have heard there are some) but I would be happy to visit further on the topic. Buona fortuna.

Bruce: Thanks for your reply. Yes, please see how your friend placed his child in school in Citta de Castello, as it looks like that's where we're going to hang our hats in late January 2006. And, absolutely, when we arrive and settle a bit, we would love to meet up with you and other EXPATS, if there are any others in that area. Our private email is: jengenzale@hotmail.com. Send us your phone number in late December or early January and we'll call when we get there. My boys aren't too thrilled about this adventure either but I am certain it will be an experience that will enrich their lives. I look forward to future postings. Best regards (however you say that in Italian)
Jenny & John

We have arrived in Città di Castello and I have been in contact with your friends here. Debbie knows how to reach us, so when your daughter comes in the spring, please feel free to call us for any help you may need. (PS= my boys are making slow progress. We have been here one week today!)
Best wishes. Jenny & John Genzale

Hi Jenny,

I am planning on moving to Trevignano Romano north of Rome before the end of the year, I fully appreciate the worries that you have with regards to your sons.
I hold the Italian Passport and citizenship as my grandfather was Italian,I spent the month of June over in Italy last year and fell in love with it for your sons I feel it is a different way of life for them, one of the reasons I have made the decision is that crime rate in Britain has become out of control my son is 12 years of age and is really looking forward to the move.
I do not speak Italian although I did take lessons at college last year but feel unless you are using it daily its been a waste of time for me as I have remembered very little.
I will keep in touch and email me whenever as it would be nice to meet up with people who are feeling the same, I am all excited but still a bit apprehensive.
Wishing you all the best
Alison

It'll be fine tae hae a neebor ah cin hae a wee bit claik wie every aince in a files. There aren't all that many Scots around our corner, although I am gathering a few right enough - get a ceilidh going one day.

Trevignano is actually a wee bit from us - not far if we could hitch a lift on a crow but once you get round the roads it's maybe 20 minutes away. We are just north of Oriolo Romano.

My Italian is abysmal considering I've been here for a few years, but my wife is absolutely fluent if we can ever be of service in that area or just to chat in wir ain leid occasionally.

Hey, here's a north-Romish thing for us all to do on May 27th:

www.romanroadwalks.com no cost, 9 km walk along the via Clodia from Oriolo to Bracciano. Sack lunch, call Dave at 3886144204. Visit Bracciano’s museum in former convent near the Castello.

David Morton is a nice and very knowledgeable guide to the old Roman roads. Plus it's FREE!

Sorry it's off-topic!

Very interesting.
Being tied up with work and new children I don't know whether any/all of us will manage to go, but it would be a nice thing for me to take our 7yo daughter on. I will call him after I've discussed with my wife. Thanks for the tip.

I went on the walk on Sunday and that was fun too. We left the car at Manziana and walked to see the remains of a Roman aqueduct (built during Trajan's rule) and descended to the dry stream bed below it. It was awesome! Then we walked on to Bracciano for lunch. David is great as a guide. Hope to met you guys at the GTG on Saturday, otherwise, let's start a new thread for a Northern Lazio GTG of our own later in the summer.

We put our kids in public school in Pordenone (Friuli-VZ). At that time they were 7 and 11. I don't recall the school ever asking for our residency papers. I believe we simply provided a birth certificate and medical form. My suggestion is to call the school and find out what documentation they require.

I'm sure they asked for your carta d'Identita, that is your residency paper.

Don't know Dan JZ's circumstances but my first 10 years here we had no carta d'identita, only our US passports, and military IDs. With this we bought our house, bought a used car, etc.

My bad- should have quoted this from his other post:
I was stationed at Aviano for four years and fell in love with the place.

In general to register your children in schools here you will need a Codice Fiscale, copies of your passport and the childrens, copies of the childrens vacination records and copies of all of their previous school reports. When you become resident then you can take a copy for their school files.

We had no problems registering our children before we became resident.........however different Commune may have different rules so it is best to check. Most areas run a centralised school system where there will be one school office which does all the admin for the local schools in their area and your Commune will be able to tell you which one.

I am trying to find a list or some information on all the schools (secondary level) that offer education through English or through a combination of English and Italian. My son is finding his education in an Italian school a bit tough going and so we are looking to ease his load by putting him in an international school. If anyone has any info, experiences or contact addresses I would be most grateful. Thank you
