I know this is an old topic - but I have yet to find american brown sugar in my neighborhood - not zucchero di canna.

If anyone knows where I can buy it in the Perugia/Foligno/Spoleto area, let me know....if anyone in the area has imported some and could lend me 2 cups, Big Grin that would be great too!

Sorry, I don't know the area but I know that *sometimes* it mysteriously turns up at our local coop (their own brand). Might be worth a look!

I think that this has been covered here in the past. I am sure you will; find your answer right here on Expats if you do a few searches.

While I can almost always find zucchero di canna (Coop brand) in our local Coop or the IperCoop at Collestrada, I've NEVER seen true American-style brown sugar which is much, much moister than zucchero di canna.

I've heard of people adding a bit of molasses (melassa, in Italian) to sugar. Some of the so-called (cheaper brand) "brown sugar" in the US is made that way.

I can't guarantee anything, but I know a shop in Perugia you can try. They have the biggest selection of foreign good I found in the area. It's called Gio. It is a Hotel, a gourmet wine store, and an ethnic grocery store. It's on the road heading down the hill toward the main train station. You have to drive up the hill away from the station, stay straight when the signs for the center guide you right, then go maybe 1/4 mile more then turn left to get to the return road to the station. Going down hill it will be on the left. The store will be on the back side of the hotel. The address is V.le Ruggero D'Andreotto, 19
Perugia 06124

I found these directions for the hotel, so they should work: From the highway connection: San Faustino exit, follow the direction to the Station. From the Station drive to the slope boulevard; at the traffic light go straight on, after 300 meters you will find the indication to the hotel at your left (between the Department store Giò and the “Total” sign.

We were just talking about this shop at the 4th of July cookout! There's also a British goods shop on via Priori for any Brits with cravings!
