Tomato paste is concentrato di pomodoro. I don't know about the crushed ones.

You'll find all the different canned tomatoes - whole, cubed, pulped, fillets, whatever - lined up on the shelf at the COOP or alimentari. The picture on the tin tells you what's inside.

we did that and it did not work...and not all of them have pictures...we bought polpa thinking that was it but that turned out to be cubed..pelati was whole...but we want crushed (we are lazy and don't want to mash the whole) also do they come in pure too and if so what are they called...thanks

thanks bill2 for the concentrate...

Ok, I went and looked: it says "polpa di pomodoro" with a picture of chopped tomatoes on the label. The French translation is "tomates concassés" which bears out. I think "pomodori interi" or just "pomodori pelati" refer to whole tomatoes, and "concentrato" as Bill says, is paste.

Hope that helps!

The tomato paste here comes in tubes, not cans. I buy the triplo concentrato, mor elike what I am used to in the US.

I use muti or cirio brand polpa to make chili - they are a bit more crushed. The cirio "polpa d'oro" (I think) which says it is for making pizzas is more "cube-like", so try the regular "polpa piu" by cirio. Both muti and cirio come in cans.
Cirio also makes bottled tomato sauce, the rustico is a bit chunky, verace is smooth, I sometimes mix the polpa with one of these.

Use 'Passata Rustica'. You can get this at any supermarket. It's in bottles and is essentially pure, crushed tomatoes. 'Passata Rustica' is a little less liquid/juicy than the 'regular' type and makes great chilli. Can recommend the 'De Cecco' brand.

One more to try I forgot about, Cirio "La Finissima". I bought some the other day, box containing two small cans says it is a new product, absolutely no cubes, finally chopped, juicy and good. I had never seen it before, found it in a small supermarket in Sirolo, but I haven't looked for it in the bigger supermarkets.
I'd say it would definitely do for chili.
