Hi

I just want to say a Big thank you to all of you who have responded to my pregnancy postings this year! re hospital care, pg care, breast feeding etc. etc.

I was torn between staying here in Italy to have baby or going home... after lots of deciphering and mostly due to family commitments here in Italy, I decided to brave it here in Italy. I now have a c section scheduled at the local hospital for next Friday 8th June, also my eldest daughters birthday!

I have asked if I could prebook a private room and was informed that I need to check if a one is available at that time so jsut in case, I have prepared some dvd movies to watch on my personal dvd player just in case I have to share with another 3 italian woman.. I am not unsociable I just really dont understand much italian yet..

.... I have heard that you can choose between having your baby in the nido or keeping baby with you in your room.... my questions is... can you choose also to have baby with you during hte day and then to have him in the nido during the night?

Has anyone had a tubal tie operation carried out at the same time as their c section? and if so, were you given a local or general anaesthetic?

Finally

Could anyone help me out with the words I need to use to ask the following questions..... if it is possible to keep baby with me during the day and have him in the nido during the night. And... Am I going to be given a general or local anaesthetic.

finally.... would it be possible to have baby returned to me as soon as he has had his paediatric checks carried out.. and about how long will this be?

Thanks again

Joanne

Hi Joanne, I don't know the answers to your questions (I'm about 30 weeks behind you,) but I just wanted to say good luck! I'll be thinking about you.

Hello, I'm not sure if I remember correctly or not, but isn't your OH Italian? Won't he be able to help with the communication with the medical staff?

Good luck!

HI Joanne

Good luck with the birth! Meant to say that before to answer one of your other posts. Sorry i cannot help you with many of your questions as i did not have my baby in ITaly and i think every hospital would be different; you'll have to check locally.

With your c-section (+/- tubes tied), how soon after they give you the baby also depends if you have a general anaesthetic or c-section. I know people here (in sicily mind you, maybe diff there) who only get to have a GA so do not even get the baby until the next day!!! You/ your husband/ someone who speaks italian should speak to your anaesthetist and ask then to write in your notes you want the baby with you ASAP, and during the day etc, so any of the staff can see it. If you can chose i would imagine the epidural is the best option but again you would need to discuss that with the medical personnel based on your particular case and the hospital procedures/ policy etc.

I can give you some suggestions for italian, but my written italian is terrible, so i am sure someone else can correct me.

Posso avere il mio/ la mia bimbo/a con me subito dopo e' nato/a? (can i have the baby with me ASAP after it is born)

Posso avere il mio/ la mia bimbo/a con me per il giorno? (can i have the baby with me during the day)

Posso lasciare il mio/ la mia bimbo/a nel(?in) nido per la notte? (can i leave the baby in the nursery for the night)

I think they also bring the baby to you when it is hungry anyway. (day and night?)

Hope this is of some help. Good luck and 'lucky you' having 2 kids with the same BD.....

1)Posso tenere il bambino / la bambina durante il giorno e lasciarlo al nido durante la notte?

il bambino if he's a male
la bambina if she's a female

2)Mi farete l'anestesia locale o totale?

Good luck!

I've seen several C sections on TV and they have all had saddle block anesthesia. You can easily be awake during delivery, and you recover faster, too. The only strange perception is pressure in your chest as things get pushed around a bit, but at 9 months, you must be used to that!

Joanne, try and get these questions answered before you go in for the C section - ideally with your (Italian?) husband or an Italian speaker so that you have these answers confirmed. From my SIL's experience in Lecce, she was not given the baby until later that evening - ie hours after her C section. I think she had a local, in that she was awake during the operation. The babies in that hospital are kept in the nido all the time and were wheeled in on trolleys at a set time to see the mothers, then taken back to the nido.

Rather than ask these Qs on the day itself, when you may be stressed, try and make a visit beforehand. If the hospital has a policy like the Lecce one of keeping babies in the nido, you may be upset and it's better to know this in advance than on the day.

HOW EXCITING that your baby is coming in one week. I'm so happy for you. I can't help with the Italian translation, but I can help by sharing my recent baby experience at a hospital near Verona. Keep in mind, that every hospital is different.

You can have your baby stay with you as much, or as little as you like. Most of the women had their babies sleep overnight in the nido, but not all of them. It's totally up to you how much time the baby spends in the nido. Some women had their babies in their room all the time, other than the morning visits from the doctor (for the baby - which I wasn't allowed to attend). The nido also had little classes where you would learn to nurse, bathe, and clothe the baby.

I was in a private room during the labor and delivery and as soon as he came out, they handed him to me for a few moments, and then the nurse took him to a table beside me and washed him up and weighed him etc. He was back to me within just a few minutes and then stayed with me.

One thing I wished I would have known was that people don't come to check on the patients. If I needed anything I was supposed to ring the bell and ask for it. I was expecting the nurses etc to come in every so often and check on me, but they didn't. So - if you need something, don't be afraid to buzz the nurse and ask for it.

Best of luck to you next week. Let us know how it goes. And if you have any questions.
