I think you have to put your children first, I certainly would not advise seeking the services of someone advertising in a news paper. Perhaps you need to hold off on the job until the children start school. What about extended family, someone coming over with you till all sorted.

Wow! I know Aniya (I am the Jen she referred to) and she IS putting her children first. I hope I didn't misunderstand your response... Can we stay on topic on this one and not scare our new member away? If anyone in Torino knows of a reputable babysitter or babysitting service that would be great. Thanks everyone.

We should try to put Aniya in touch with Laurie, who has been in Torino for quite some time and probably has her ear to the ground--also probably knows the right publications to get hold of. Meanwhile she could try torinoaffari.it (Jen, I sent this one to you a while back, do you still have the right http?) to get an idea what's out there and prices. I have seen daycare centres but no recollection where they are now--not having toddlers, I don't tend to pay a lot of attention, sorry!
Aniya, when exactly are you expecting to arrive, and what is your window, ie, how much time do you have between hitting the ground and running with your job? (Jen has none so she's had to organise a lot from Berkeley, not easy).
Anyway, welcome to Torino and our growing group!

quote: On a side Jen, what is your flying route to Torino?
I am going SFO- Munich, Munich- Torino on Lufthansa, and apparently Air Dolomiti ( ) Just kiddin'! So, this site is all about kids in Torino: http://www.torinobimbi.it/index.php Got this suggestion from this forum, and seems to have lots of activities and services for parents of younger children and lots of summer programs. Then there is this one with public announcements about babysitting services: http://www.annunci.net/annunci/90/posts/10_Offerte_di_l...y_sitter_Assistenza/And this one: http://torino.kijiji.it/f-Servizi-Babysitter-W0QQCatIdZ300110All in Italian! I know, I know, but I didn't see anything in English. I mean, of course you can find some babysitter candidates and then meet them, interview them, talk to their references, just like you would anywhere else and of course we can work as a team on that! Also, there are babysitting centers announced on these sites as well, especially the torinobimbi one. Last, what about co-workers? They must have sitters, have you contacted them to ask for some suggestions? There may even be Univ. students looking for summer work. I don't even have the whole summer figured out, for sure, but as a back-up I feel comfortable leaving my son at home alone for 1/2 a day during daylight hours but 10 year olds do naughty things when they are bored and unsupervised...

I said "wow" because it seemed that you were jumping to conclusions by suggesting that Aniya should put her children first- what would have triggered your comment in the first place? It had a judgmental ring to me, and in fact if you read the rest of post I also say: "I hope I didn't misunderstand your response...", since I did account for a possible misunderstanding of your message. Anyway, this is all a mute point since Aniya found a nanny and I am so glad that she has that worked out!

Aniya, glad you found someone - only just looked at this thread and my final comment on the situation is that a happy mother has happy children! I've been a working mum and a stay at home mum (current situation!), both my kids seem perfectly normal to me. If anything I think you are setting a good example for your children by working - I have a friend with her own business who worries about not seeing her daughter, I tell her she is setting her a good example. When she is with her she makes sure that she does plenty with her daughter. I'm with mine 24/7 unless she is at school and would never claim to be the perfect mum when she is home. Playhouse Disney is a good sitter! You do what is right for you and it will work out well for your kids. Good luck with the job!

I was not being judgemental, I had said about maybe holding off a while as it sounded 'desperate' and individuals can make silly choices when in a tizzy. I am not saying mums should not work but that in a new country , no contacts or few I assume, obviously not aware of what may or may not be available for childcare or what checks are in place for those who claim to be babysitters one should be a bit more prudent. By the way there are no checks in place here as there would be in the UK for instance, though this no absolute guarentee at least it is a step in the right direction.
