I am looking for an English speaking midwife to attend the birth of our baby in the end of December/beginning of January. We live in a small town called Treiso just outside of Alba in Piemonte. Does anyone have any advice as to how to locate someone to help us????? I have been seeing a doctor here and my Italian is not very good which makes the situation a little difficult!!! Thanks,

Andrea

Hi Andrea,
I sympathize with you because this time last year I was in your position. My son was born January 11 of this year. In my experience, the most important thing is to confirm that your hospital will actually let you bring in a midwife. Most hospitals in Italy do not allow you to bring in more than one person and my hospital said specifically that I couldn't bring my own midwife. I'd speak with your doctor and speak with the hospital because perhaps they could lead you in the right direction. There are a few English-speaking midwives in Milan. I know the contact information for at least one is listed on this site (you'll have to do a search through the pregnancy threads). Perhaps she'd have a contact in your area. The other thing to do is check with your local Consultorio Familiare. You can find the number in the phone book. They would probably know. Good luck!
