In 2009 a mandatory drug/alcohol test will be required to get a patente or patentino. A test program will start in September 2008 in Cagliari, Verona, Perugia, e Foggi.

Seems largely symbolic, since it's easy to beat a scheduled test. A breathalyzer ignition interlock is a much more effective deterrent to drunk driving.
