As a privatista, you're going to have to hire a dual-control car from a driving school to do the practical driving test anyway. Might as well buy the book from them.

Will they sell you the book if ALL you are going to purchase from them is use of the car? Or MUST you take the whole driving course with them in order to buy the book?

You must ask them if they will do so.

I had to ask more than one before I found a scuola that would sell me the book and then rent me their car (and instructor) to take the driving portion. They also set-up the medical exam. If one tries to sell you the whole package go onto the next one.

I'm curious...did you save any money by doing that? I understand that the courses can vary by price by a lot!

Where does one take the written exam? What does it cost to take it?

And then, where does one take the driving exam--same place or at the driving school?

Are the two tests usually taken same day, one after the other? Or,.... not necessarily?

I'm pretty sure that there are at least a few threads here on Expats that will answer your questions as many people on here have gotten their licenses in Italy. Do a few searches and I'm sure you will find them.

The theory exam is given at the Motorizzazione Civile (DMV). The fees and taxes for the foglio rosa (permit) and exam were a couple hundred Euro (see http://expattalk.com/groupee/forums/a/tpc/f/8580080744/m/7920058604 )

We had the driving test at our autoscuola. The 2 tests are on different days (at least 1 month apart).

I've said it before, but I think taking the autoscuola classes in Italian are something not to be missed, particularly if you want to improve your Italian. I looked on it as driving school and language school. On top of which, the school organises all the paperwork, makes the appointments, et al, saving you a lot of time, travel, and, most certainly, frustration.

100% agreed- I learned much more than Italian driving rules at autoscuola. Well worth it.

Fantastic link...I'm reading it with great interest. Also got the great download on page 16 with ability to change the languages. Thanks to all.

I'll go do more searching for more up-to-date exam taking experiences. E.g., oral vs written exam, etc.

Ah....well, I haven't made my way through the entire 16-page thread....but, I think you are saying for stranieri we can no longer take it as an oral exam....right? (I read the first 3 pages of the thread - dating back to spring 2006, then jumped to page 16--must go back and read 4-15.)

There seem to be pockets where the computers aren't available yet, etc. I think jhelm in Belluno and someone down south (maybe Sicily?) still had the oral exam. But it may have changed by now.
