I bought a second hand bike last year from a private seller, if your are able to pay cash then you and the seller can both go to a pratica auto and sign the scooter over, assuming you can immediately (or already have) arranged insurance (with Genertel you can do this over the internet/phone) you can drive the scoot away right then. The pratica auto takes care of the formal ownership change on the libretto and certificato di proprietà. The only problem would then be to pick up the new libretto and certificato di proprietà a couple of weeks later. You may be able to get the pratica auto people to send them in the post (it would be a slight risk for you though); I went back and picked them up personally. Obviously the pratica auto agency will charge you for all this; I cannot remember how much I paid them but it sure beats doing battle yourself at the motorizzazione. Remember if you buy from a private individual you have no warranty (Caveat emptor) whereas if you buy a second hand scoot from a dealer he is OBLIGED by law to give you a 2 year warranty unless you mutually agree to reduce this to 1 year.

We just went to a scooter shop, and he said it's only for one year, but you can extend it to two years by paying extra. (I don't trust his word much though, coz he ripped my wife off once) It sounds like buying in Milan would be hard work. Another case of unnecessarily complex Italian bureaucracy to deal with! *sigh*

As I said, he is obliged to give you a 2 year warranty unless you agree to reduce it to 1 year. This is what the scoot dealer is proposing, i.e. the scoot costs less if you accept a 1 year warranty instead of 2 years.

If you go to this page: http://www.ghostridershop.com/cat043.php?n=1"Kymco XCITING 250 del 2006 GARANZIA 12 MESI" Seems all the shops do this. *shrug*
