Hello,

I'm trying to determine whether I can drive with my Israeli license in Italy and what laws apply after 1 year from receiving residency. The Israeli government site says I can drive in Italy without an international driver's license (citing some recent agreement).

Would anyone know where I can find the exact clause in the Italian legal documentation that would mention this arrangement that will explain the details in Italian, especially whether I can "convert" the license to an Italian one after one year?

Cheers,
Uri

I don't have the url for the Israeli site so can't view the recent agreement. The Italian Ministry of Transport site doesn't list Israel as one of the countries whose license can be converted. In that case, you would need to take the driving theory and practical exam. Some folks have done this without attending autoscuola, going directly to their Motorizzazione Civile. You still would need to use an autoscuola's dual control car for your driving exam.

There's conflicting info. Here, it lists Israel as one of the countries from which you can convert your licence. But who knows how reliable it is?

Good find Graeme. Someone needs to let the Ministry of Transport know.

I do note that at the bottom of that article it states:
quote:
This article is an extract from Living and Working in Italy.

That was last published in 2003. Doesn't mean it's incorrect though.

There's also mention on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website that negotiations are/were taking place to recognise Israeli licences. Maybe it happened.

Could you give us a link to it, Graeme? That would be great news.

There was also mention on a Portugese-Israeli government site - how's that for a combo? - that Italy recognises Israeli licences.

Can you post the link? Maybe that one is the golden bullet.

Hi Graeme, Bill,
Thanks for the refs info -- I found some of them and was quite confused. Israeli newspapers (in Hebrew, so am not posting links here) collectively report that it is allowed to drive in Italy with Israeli license (sans IDL) but are mum on what happens once a year has passed (conversion; tests etc').
I'm trying to get in touch with some people who know Italian diplomats -- will post link if I find the actual bylaw / declaration in Italian.

Uri,
Here's the conversion procedure from the Ministry of Transport site:
quote:
