So we have a under the counter type frig that is not under the counter...with a very small freezer unit that we never use as we have a separate freezer...but the freezer part need defrosting...so we unplugged and waited...when we finally could open the freezer part it was one pice of solid ice...to hurry it along we used a knife etc to get it off..(know not to bright) and we punctured the side of this small unit...heard and smelled the gas leave...so is this repairable or replaceable: if the former who does this sort of thing if the latter any idea of cost?....

It will be expensive as the appliance repair shop will have to replace/braze the punctured line in the freezer then refill the unit with freon. Was it very expensive to begin with? If not, might be cheaper to just replace it.

Have you seen the film "Eastern Promises" by any chance? Some creative use of hair dryer to thaw...

Not much consolation to you right now (and having done exactly the same as you a few yrs back, a new freezer was then my only option) but even easier and cheaper than a hair dryer is a bowl filled with boiling water. Place in freezer...shut door...and let the steam do the work for you.

It's now summer so you'll need to keep it on a cooler setting--just remember to turn it back down in the fall! You might try setting 3 and see if it cools sufficiently, and if not, nudge it up until you get it where you like it.

It depends on the make of the fridge, and they're as different as makes of cars, but as long as you're stuff isn't turning into solid ice, and not spoiling either, you should eventually find the setting you're happy with.
